Frequently Asked Questions

Synchronica has compiled a list of answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about its products, installation, and some of the common problems and solutions when using the software.

Synchronica Mobile Gateway offers the greatest benefits to people who spend a significant amount of time on the road. They will be able to work more efficiently by being able to schedule appointments, maintain contact information, as well as receive the most recent emails on their mobile phone. Traveling sales representatives, management and service personnel should find the benefits of Synchronica Mobile Gateway particularly attractive.

Many mobile phone manufacturers support industry standards for email delivery, contacts and calendar synchronization. These include; Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and Samsung.
This provides a wide range of feature phones and smartphones that are supported by Mobile Gateway
A list of compatible mobile phones can be found here.
In addition Synchronica provide downloadable applications for major handset groups, which do not support OMA DS as standard, for PIM and email synchronization. These include Windows Mobile and Palm OS handsets.

The Synchronica Mobile Gateway supports wide range of business email and PIM and ISP email services.
Business email and PIM service support includes Microsoft Exchange, Sun Java Communication Suite and Lotus Domino for email, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes data.
For ISP email services Mobile Gateway supports the IMAP and POP3 standards to access ISP email. Popular ISPs such as Yahoo Mail and Google Mail can be accessed in this way.
Windows Live (MSN) Hotmail is not currently supported.
Some ISPs (including Yahoo and Google) may require POP access or a premium account to be enabled to allow Mobile Gateway access to deliver email.

The Synchronica Mobile Gateway is based entirely on industry standards to allow handset configuration, mobile data delivery and synchronization.
These standards include:
OMA Client Provisioning – For mobile phone configuration
OMA Data Synchronization – For synchronization of contacts, calendar, email, tasks and notes data
IMAP and SMTP – For email send and receive
IMAP Idle and OMA Email Notification – For push email delivery.

SyncML (Synchronization Markup Language) or OMA-DS (Open Mobile Alliance Data Synchronization) is an open industry standard adopted by the Open Mobile Alliance, spear-headed by leading mobile phone manufacturers, including Siemens, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson. It is a common standard for wireless synchronization of calendar, address book, email and files between a PIM (Personal Information Management) Server and the built-in PIM applications of mobile devices.
Synchronica Mobile Gateway utilizes the SyncML/OMA-DS standards and supports synchronization of calendar, contacts, tasks, notes and email with any OMA-DS-enabled device. Synchronica is an active member in the Open Mobile Alliance and has invested significant effort into ensuring a standards-compliant implementation of the Mobile Gateway and interoperability with the various OMA-DS clients available.

OMA-DS (Data Synchronization) was designed to provide synchronization of Personal Information Management (PIM) data such as calendar, contacts, tasks, notes and email.
OMA-DM (Device Management), was designed for remote management of mobile devices and can be used to inspect and manipulate the device configuration, install or remove applications or even upgrade the firmware of the device.
Synchronica Mobile Gateway is a complete implementation of the OMA-DS protocol.
Synchronica Mobile Manager Suite provides firmware update over-the-air (FOTA) and device management capabilities.

PIM (Personal Information Management) is a collective term for a range of organizer tools used in everyday business and personal life. These include; contacts (address book), calendar, tasks and notes.
Mobile Gateway uses the OMA-DS standard to synchronize this PIM information between the PIM store (e.g. Microsoft Exchange) and the mobile phone.

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is an internet standard for delivering email over the internet. Many mobile phones support IMAP compatible email applications as well as supporting the OMA-DS standard for PIM synchronization.
Mobile Gateway supports a fully functional IMAP gateway with sits alongside the OMA DS synchronization service to provide a complete mobile email and PIM service

Push email is a mechanism by which email can be delivered to a mobile phone email application without the user having to manually connect to collect the email.
Push Email is the basis of many well known business mobile email services such as BlackBerry or Visto, however these solutions are built on proprietary mechanisms which require dedicated devices or on device applications to operate.
Mobile Gateway supports two industry standard mechanisms for delivering Push Email to standard mobile phones:
IMAP Idle: IMAP Idle is part of the IMAP protocol (see What is IMAP?), this allows a dedicated IMAP connection to be set up between the mobile phone and Mobile Gateway so that email can be delivered to the device as soon as it is delivered to Mobile Gateway
OMA Email Notification (EMN): OMA EMN is an industry standard mechanism that allows a mobile phone to be alerted by SMS of a new email so that it can be automatically collected by the mobile phone and presented to the user.

IMAP Idle: IMAP Idle is part of the IMAP protocol (see: What is IMAP?), this allows a dedicated IMAP connection to be set up between the mobile phone and Mobile Gateway so that email can be delivered to the device as soon as it is delivered to Mobile Gateway. This provides a push email experience to the end user.

Mobile Gateway also supports the OMA-EMN standard, which alerts supported devices to new data items. From an operator perspective, OMA EMN is more attractive than IMAP Idle, because a mobile phone using OMA EMN does not require a constant connection to the server and so demands less resources on the mobile network infrastructure and has less impact on the battery life. Instead OMA EMN uses SMS messaging to alert the mobile device that new emails have arrived.

For commercial reasons, Synchronica does not divulge its own costs publicly, although we would be happy to provide a quote as part of any formal enquiry. Synchronica would be happy to discuss a very compelling return on investment scenario with you.

LEMONDADE means License to Enhanced Mobile Oriented and Diverse Endpoints.

It is a single and simple set of Internet Standards needed to support mobile messaging. Established by the Internet Engineering Task Force, the LEMONADE standard was designed to improve the user experience and usability of email on mobile devices by promoting open standards, such as IMAP Idle and OMA EMN.

By being compliant with LEMONDADE,  Synchronica is able to deliver push email and calendar / contact synchronization to mass market feature phones, representing more than 80 percent of devices in use today, as well as high-end smartphones in use in the business market. All these services can be delivered without requiring any additional client to be installed on the device. Synchronica's Mobile Gateway 3.0 also includes back-end support for popular email services, such as Gmail or AOL, as well as enterprise systems, such as Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino.
