GSM Generation 2.5 describes a GSM network that has either a GPRS or EDGE deployment within the network, and is therefore able to provide mobile Internet access and multimedia services (MMS). 2.5G subscribers are fully equipped to enjoy all of the features found in Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup.

GSM Generation 2 describes a basic GSM network that has not deployed GPRS or EDGE functionality within the network. 2G subscribers are still able to take advantage of push email services, by using the email to SMS function found in Synchronica Mobile Gateway.

GSM Generation 3 describes a GSM network that has been enhanced with a Wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA) air interface, and is able to provide mobile multimedia services and high-speed broadband Internet access. 3G subscribers are fully equipped to enjoy all of the features found in Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup.
- Access Charge
An access charge is a charge that has been levied to a subscriber for making use of the Service Provider's services during a period of time.
- AL
Acceptance Limit. This is the maximum limit of deviation which will be permitted during the testing of planned results in a project.
- Android
Android is an operating system for mobile devices which has been developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance. By basing itself on the Linux operating system, developers can easily write code in a Java-like language that utilizes Google-developed Java libraries. As an open source mobile operating system, Synchronica fully supports the Android initiative, and has road mapped the development of a SyncML application for Android devices.
- Apache
Apache is a robust and extremely flexible open-source HTTP network for UNIX-based systems. As the most popular HTTP server type currently in use within the World Wide Web, Apache generally serves both static content and dynamic Web pages.
- APN
Access Point Name. This is the name of an access point for a device to connect onto the GPRS service. The APN defines which Internet network the device must connect to, the settings which are to be used for its connection and any service authentication data. Synchronica, which bases its technology on open-industry standards and zero-footprint architecture, functions using your existing Service Provider's APN settings - so there's no need to change your device configuration.
- ARPU
Average Revenue Per User. This is the average amount of revenue which a Service Provider earns from a single subscriber during a given period of time.
- ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A standard code which represents Western characters as numbers, and enables multiple computers to transfer data among themselves.
- ASP
Application Service Provider. This is an organization that provides computer-based services to customers, often using the software-as-a-service business model. ASPs tend to appeal to small and medium sized businesses, which may be unable to support complex software in-house. Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup have proven to be popular amongst ASPs, as they can implement push email and synchronization services onto existing solutions with relative ease.
- Attachment
An attachment is a file which is added onto the body of, and sent with, an email message. Synchronica Mobile Gateway allows you to add attachments onto an email on your mobile device - just as you would if you were in front of a personal computer.
- Back-End
A back-end is a link into a server. Synchronica Mobile Gateway supports:
- MS Exchange, allowing connection to a subscriber’s emails, contacts, calendar entries, Tasks and Notes by using the standard Outlook Web Access, (OWA), protocol provided as part of Exchange.
- Sun Java Communications Suite, typically used as a hosted email and PIM platform by network operators and service providers, allowing a combined offering of hosted and mobile emails and contacts, calendar and tasks.
- IBM Lotus Domino, using the CORBA/IIOP and IMAP interfaces to access emails, contacts, calendar entries, tasks and notes.
- POP3, the most basic back-end for mail delivery over the Internet, it is largely used in the consumer and prosumer markets. The POP3 back-end allows subscribers to access mobile email, contacts, calendar, tasks and notes.
- IMAP, again largely used in the consumer and prosumer markets, the IMAP back-end allows subscribers to access mobile email, contacts, calendar, tasks, notes and folders.
Synchronica Mobile Gateway also becomes compatible with any other back-end by simply making use of a back-end connector.
- Base64
Base64 is a method of translating and encoding the characters within a stream of data into ASCII text, allowing it to be sent via an email message.
- BCC
Blind Carbon Copy. This is a copy of an email message that has been sent to a recipient without the recipient's email address or identity being revealed. By sending an email from Synchronica Mobile Gateway, you'll be able to add BCC and CC email addresses just as you would if you were in front of a personal computer.
- BREW
Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless. This is an open-source application development platform for CDMA devices developed by Qualcomm. As a platform, BREW is currently in competition with J2ME. Synchronica is devoting significant resources to research and development of the BREW platform
- BSF
Bean Scripting Framework. This is a set of Java classes which provides scripting language support within Java applications, and access to Java objects and methods from scripting languages.
- CalConnect
Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium CalConnect is a public industry organization which has been created to further improve the interoperable exchange of calendaring and scheduling information across programs, platforms, and technologies and to promote the understanding of, and mechanisms for, interoperable methodologies, tools, and applications that incorporate or use calendaring and scheduling data. As it focuses on providing mechanisms that enable interoperability, Synchronica is an active member of CalConnect.

- CalDAV
Calendaring Extensions to WebDAV. This is a protocol which enables a client to access scheduling information on a server. By allowing multiple clients access to information, CalDAV facilitates cooperative planning and information sharing. Synchronica actively supports the CalDAV protocol.

- CDMA
Code-Division Multiple Access. This is an analogue to digital telecommunications standard which allows multiple transmissions to take place in a single traffic channel, thereby increasing capacity. The original CDMA standard, also known as CDMA One, is still a common standard used by service providers in the USA. However, later generation technologies have been developed which deliver greater data possibilities. Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup services are fully compatible with CDMA infrastructure.
- Client
A client is an application that needs to be installed on a device, and relies on a server to perform its functions. Synchronica's mobile software solutions, which are based on a unique zero footprint architecture. This means that there is no need to install a client on a device; therefore, security standards are not compromised.

A consumer is an individual or a household that makes use of a product or service.

Consumer Mobile Email allows an individual or a household to have access to a real-time email service by simply owning a mobile device. Central Processing Unit. This is the area of a device that executes and operates programs.

Device Description Framework. A part of OMA-DM.

The digital divide is the gap between those people who have access to digital devices and information technology and those who do not. A double opt-in is a secondary confirmation of one's agreement to accept product or service information via email. It acts as an additional safeguard, taken by responsible marketers, to ensure that the recipient is happy to receive product or service email from them, and that their email communications will not be handled as Spam.

Data Synchronization. Part of the OMA/SyncML specification.
- EDGE
Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution. This is a 2.5G mobile data service designed to deliver data at rates up to 384 Kbps, and to enable the delivery of multimedia and other content as well as applications. to mobile phone and computer users. EDGE subscribers are fully equipped to enjoy all of the features found in Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup.
- Email to SMS
Email to SMS converts an email message into a text message. This means that even if consumers own a device that does not support push email they will still be able to enjoy the benefits of Synchronica Mobile Gateway. The email to SMS feature is particularly suitable for consumer mobile email because it essentially provides full compatibility with 100% of the GSM devices on the market, meaning subscribers will not need to invest in a new device to take advantage of an affordable, reliable and convenient email service.

An emerging market is an economy which is currently in the early stages of development, and has a sufficient size to warrant long-term investment. Enterprise Mobile Email describes a mobile service which enables professionals within an organization to access their corporate email server via their mobile device. Synchronica Mobile Gateway supports Microsoft Exchange, Sun Java Communications Suite and the IBM Lotus Domino back-ends for enterprise mobile email, in addition to any other back-end by simply making use of a back-end connector.

Exchange Web Connect. This is the former name of OWA.
- Fast Sync
Fast Synchronization. A method of data synchronization in which only those data items are synchronized that have been modified since the last synchronization.
- Feature Phone
A feature phone is a consumer mass-market mobile telephone device that allows users to send and retrieve emails, view and update contacts, appointments and tasks, play multimedia files and games, exchange SMS messages and browse the Web in addition to making and receiving calls. Feature phones typically support the SyncML or IMAP standards, and are therefore fully compatible with the Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup products.
- Filtering
Filtering is a set of rules that control the type of information that is to be delivered to a subscriber. Synchronica Mobile Gateway offers a number of filtering options including limiting delivery of unread emails only, not allowing attachments to be delivered, and even the automatic removal of old emails.
The White List feature of Synchronica Mobile Gateway enables the subscriber to only receive emails from senders, which are added to the address book of the device. The feature provides an effective control against malicious, spam or phishing emails.
- Firewall
A firewall is hardware or software that has been designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network.
- Firmware
Firmware is a set of instructions which is permanently stored onto the device. Firmware tells the device how it must operate.
- FTP
File Transfer Protocol. This is a TCP/IP protocol for exchanging files across the Internet.
- Gartnet OS
Also known as Palm OS, Gartnet OS is an operating system developed by US Robotics by Palm Computing for PDA's.
- GlassFish
GlassFish is an application server project headed by Sun Microsystems for the JEE platform. The commercial version is called Sun Java System Application Server 9.x. GlassFish is based on source code donated by Sun and is free software, dual-licensed under two free software licences. Synchronica fully supports this initiative and is an active member of the GlassFish Project with multiple product licence codes to develop GlassFish applications. Synchronica is also in the process of developing a JCR connector for Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup, under the GlassFish initiative.
- GPRS
General Packet Radio Service. This is a 2.5G mobile data service that replaces the need to transmit data via a dedicated channel, instead making use of smaller data packets. Under ideal conditions, GPRS is able to deliver bandwidth speeds of up to 115 kbps. GPRS subscribers are fully equipped to enjoy all of the features found in Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup.
- GSM
Global System for Mobile Communications. This is an open cellular technology based entirely on a digital standard, used for transmitting mobile voice and data services. Currently deployed in 400 networks, in over 170 countries around the world, GSM is the most popular global standard in use.
- GSMA
The GSM Association is the global trade association that represents more than 750 GSM Service Providers. The GSMA aims to ensure that devices and wireless services are globally compatible and accessible. The GSMA also enhances value to individual customers and national economies by creating new business opportunities for Service Providers and suppliers. Home Location Register. A central database of the GSM architecture providing management data to every GSM subscriber.
- HTTP
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. This is the Internet protocol that transfers data, including web pages, between web servers and web browsers.
- HTTPS
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer. This is a version of the HTTP protocol developed by Netscape, which uses encryption to ensure security between a browser and the server when confidential information is exchanged.
- IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol. This protocol enables the remote management of emails and mailboxes stored on a server. It does not require emails to be downloaded and saved onto to a local device. Synchronica Mobile Gateway supports all IMAP back-ends.

- IMAP IDLE
Internet Message Access Protocol IDLE. This is an expansion of the IMAP protocol, which by maintaining a permanent connection, enables the server to immediately alert the client whenever new message updates have been received.
Synchronica Mobile Gateway, unlike other products, offers operators OMA EMN as an alternative, thereby limiting unused network resources, and conserving bandwidth.
- IMAP4
Internet Message Access Protocol version 4. This latest version of IMAP, introduces additional features to the legacy IMAP protocol, such as keyword searching across emails. Synchronica Mobile Gateway fully supports IMAP4 as a back-end.

- IMAPS
Internet Message Access Protocol over Secure Socket Layer. This protocol uses encryption in order to secure communication between the mail server and the client.
- IMEI
International Mobile Equipment Identity. A unique serial number assigned to a mobile device.
- IMSI
International Mobile Subscriber Identity. This is a number that uniquely identifies a GSM subscriber.
- Intellectual Property
Intellectual Property is a legal term which ensures that the developer of the ‘property' has exclusive rights to it. Intellectual Property provides an incentive for the developer to share and further develop his property rather than keeping it secret. Intellectual Property prevents other developers from adding onto, repackaging or modifying the developer's property.
Unlike other providers of push email and synchronization solutions, Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup are based exclusively on open standards, therefore allowing for development and compatibility across multiple clients and servers, whilst avoiding the fierce patent wars which have dogged competing products.

Internet Protocol. This is a protocol that was developed to facilitate the sending and receiving of data across a packet-switched network.
- IP Address
Internet Protocol Address. This is a unique code that is assigned to electronic devices which make use of a computer network based on the IP standard. Essentially the IP address acts as a locator for one device to find another and then interact with it.

Internet Service Provider. This is an organization which provides subscribers with connectivity to the Internet Typically ISPs provide IMAP or POP3 email services to their consumer and prosumer subscribers. Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition. This is a platform-independent version of Java which enables the development and deployment of enterprise applications. Synchronica's flagship products, Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup, have both been built using the J2EE platform.

Java2 Micro Edition. This version of the Java development application uses a smaller library than the J2EE, and has been designed to specifically operate on devices that have limited memory and processing power, such as mobile devices. Synchronica is currently developing a J2ME application to further expand the reach of mobile devices supported by Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup.

Java is a commonly-used programming language which was developed by Sun Microsystems in 1995. Synchronica has based the code of Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup on the Java language.

Java Message Service is an application program interface from Sun Microsystems that supports messaging between computers in a network. Compatible with any major operating system platform, JMS provides a common interface to standard messaging protocols and also to special messaging services in support of Java programs.

Java Naming and Directory Interface. This allows developers to create portable applications that are enabled for a number of different naming and directory services, including file systems and directory services.
- JVM
Java Virtual Machine. In Java, a set of software programs that enable the execution of instructions - usually written in Java byte code. JVMs are available for all the most common hardware and software platforms.

Kilobit Per Second. This is a unit of data transfer which equals 1,000 bits per second.

A Kilobyte is the equivalent of 1,024 bytes of data.
- Lawful Interception
Lawful Interception is the monitoring of communications facilities, in observation of local legislation or instructions from law enforcement authorities. - LDAP
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. This is a set of protocols for accessing information directories. LDAP is based on the standards contained within the X.500 standard, but is significantly simpler.

License to Enhanced Mobile Oriented and Diverse Endpoints. This is a single and simple set of Internet standards needed to support mobile messaging. Established by the Internet Engineering Task Force, the LEMONADE standard was designed to improve the user experience and usability of email on mobile devices by promoting open standards, such as IMAP Idle and EMN.

- Microsoft Internet Explorer
Microsoft Internet Explorer is a web browser application developed by Microsoft.
- Microsoft Pocket PC
The Microsoft Pocket PC is a specification from the Microsoft Corporation that sets the requirements for hardware and software to be used on mobile devices that wish to make use of the term "Pocket PC". This specification defines a Pocket PC as "a handheld device that enables users to store and retrieve emails, contacts, appointments, tasks, play multimedia files, games, exchange text messages with Windows Live Messenger (formerly known as MSN Messenger), browse the Web, and more." Although the Microsoft Pocket PC does not support SyncML natively, Synchronica has developed and actively supports a SyncML client for the Microsoft Pocket PC that can be installed by the user onto the device.

- Microsoft Windows Mobile
Microsoft Windows Mobile is a mobile operating system with a range of basic applications for mobile devices based on the Microsoft Win32 API. Although Microsoft Windows Mobile does not provide SyncML capabilities, Synchronica has developed and actively supports a SyncML client for the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system that can be installed by the subscriber onto their device.

- MIDlet
Mobile Information Device Applet. This is a small program that has been designed for Java powered embedded mobile devices.
- MNC
Mobile Network Code. This is a number which identifies a particular mobile network operator in a specific mobile country. The combination of MMC and MNC provides a unique identifier for every GSM mobile network operator worldwide.
- MNO
Mobile Network Operator. This is a service provider that owns and operates a mobile telecommunications network, and provides mobile telephone services to subscribers. Synchronica works with MNOs to provide ‘white-label' push email, PIM and mobile backup solutions which can be rebranded and customized to the specific needs of their subscribers.
- Mobile Backup
Synchronica Mobile Backup is Synchronica's PIM backup service which insures against the loss of data stored on a mobile phone. Open Mobile Alliance Device Description Framework. Linked to Device Management, this provides servers with information to manage client devices. Device manufacturers typically publish descriptions of their devices, allowing organizations operating device management servers to update the new description. Consequently, these servers utilize the new description to manage new functions on the devices. Linked to the OMA DM standard, Synchronica makes use of OMA DDF as an all-encompassing device management tool to cover provisioning, OTA firmware, application management and automated support.
- OMA DM
Open Mobile Alliance Device Management. This is an open standard for the Over-The-Air management of mobile devices. It specifies the client and server protocols, as well as the configuration and provisioning parameters which are to be applied to the device. - OMA DS
Open Mobile Alliance Data Synchronization. Formally referred to as SyncML, OMA DS is an open standard for the synchronization of PIM data between a mobile device and a server. Synchronica Mobile Gateway combines both OMA DS for PIM data synchronization and IMAP for email synchronization. Despite OMA DS being supported by the majority of devices in the market; only a very small number of devices support email synchronization over OMA DS. On the other hand, millions of devices support email over IMAP, but IMAP does not support calendar or contact synchronization. Thus, by combining Push-IMAP for mobile email with OMA DS for synchronization of calendar and contacts Synchronica Mobile Gateway provides an ideal synergy which supports the widest possible range of devices.

- OMA EMN
Open Mobile Alliance Email Notification. This is an OMA standard which enables a Service Provider to conserve bandwidth, by making use of the SMSC instead of IMAP IDLE as a means of notifying a device of a new email. To achieve this, OMA EMN sends a binary SMS to a device which notifies it that new email has been received, and instructing it to commence its download.
Synchronica offers OMA EMN as an alternative to IMAP IDLE, effectively preventing Service Providers from experiencing wasted bandwidth and poor network utilization.

- OMA FOTA
Open Mobile Alliance Firmware Over-The-Air. This OMA defined open standard enables a device's firmware to be remotely updated.

- Open Standard
An Open Standard is a standard that is defined, documented and published. This definition in turn allows developers to build and create open industry standard applications supported by the majority of devices in the market. - Opera
Opera is a web browser application developed by the Opera Software Company. The mobile edition of Opera supports devices using the Symbian and Windows Mobile operating systems, as well as Java ME-enabled devices.
- Opt-In
Opt-In is a method of providing one the ability to agree to accept product or service information via email.
- Opt-Out
Opt-Out is a method of allowing one to decline to receive product or service information via email.
- OSS
Operational Support System. This is a generic term for a suite of programs that enable an enterprise to monitor, analyze and manage their network system.
- OSS/J
OSS through Java Initiative produces a standard set of Java technology-based APIs to jump-start the implementation of end-to-end services on next-generation wireless networks, and leverage the convergence of telecommunications and Internet-based solutions.
- OTA
Over-The-Air This is the standard for the remote transmission and reception of application-related information for a mobile device. Generally OTA consists of configuration instructions to a device, and is transported via an SMSC. Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup provide simple service provisioning by making use of OTA, in order to provide a seamless subscriber registration and maintenance experience.
- OTA FF
Over-The-Air Flash Forum. This is a special interest group that addresses operational, technical and business issues associated with OTA firmware update technologies in order to simplify the management of mobile handsets, and accelerate the adoption of commercial quality software for OTA flash updates. Synchronica fully supports the OTA FF, and is an active participant in its work.
- Outlook
Outlook is a PIM client from Microsoft. Although often used primarily as an email application, it also provides calendar, task and contact management, note taking, journal and web browsing capabilities. Synchronica Mobile Gateway accesses the web access facility within Outlook to synchronize email and PIM between the server and the device. The zero-footprint approach taken by Synchronica means that administrators need not open Firewall ports or install back-end servers which contravene security policies.
Additionally, Synchronica has developed a PC-based synchronization client that uses Synchronica Mobile Gateway to synchronize contacts, calendar entries, and tasks between a server and the Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail applications on the PC. The client is designed for PC or laptop computing devices which require regular PIM and email updates, but lack a robust connection to the email server when remote.

- OWA

Synchronica Mobile Gateway accesses OWA to synchronize email and PIM between the server and the device. - Palm OS
Palm Operating System. This is an operating system developed by US Robotics by Palm Computing for PDA's. Although Palm OS does not provide SyncML capabilities, Synchronica has developed and actively supports a SyncML client for Palm OS that can be installed onto their device,

- PDA
Personal Digital Assistant. This is a handheld computing device which typically provides mobile phone functions, WWW browsing and personal organization. Although PDAs do not typically provide SyncML capabilities, Synchronica has developed and actively supports a SyncML client for the PDA that can be installed by the subscriber onto their device.

- Phishing
Phishing (pronounced ‘Fishing') is an attempt to fraudulently obtain sensitive information from a third party, by forging an email to make it appear to come from a legitimate sender, for the purpose of identity theft or robbery. - Phonebook Backup
Phonebook Backup is the ability to copy mobile phonebook contact files to a second location as a precaution in case the mobile device fails, or is lost or stolen. Synchronica Mobile Backup service provides phonebook backup features. Users can sign up for this service using the Internet, a WAP interface, or by sending an SMS.

Picture Synchronization. This is the ability to synchronize between server and device, any image which is attached to a saved contact. Personal Information Management. This is the collective name given to contacts, calendar entries, notes, tasks and emails.

Personal Information Management Synchronization. This is the ability to synchronize PIM data between a server and device. - POP3
Post Office Protocol version 3. This email protocol downloads email messages from a server onto a local device. Once successfully downloaded onto the local device, POP3 deletes the email from the server.
- Prosumer
A prosumer is a term used to describe a professional consumer. Prosumers tend to be highly discerning, and rely on services which enhance their business as well as personal productivity. The Synchronica Mobile Gateway service allows prosumer's to take their offices onto the streets. The product which can be used with any IMAP or POP3 email provider pushes email and synchronizes PIM data between their device and their email service, thereby improving efficiency and responsiveness.

A protocol is a defined set of procedures, conventions and methods that enable multiple devices to communicate with each other.
- Pull Email

- Safari
Safari is a web browser application developed by the Apple Corporation. Safari is the default browser in Mac OS-X v10.3 and later, and is the resident browser for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch. Safari for Microsoft Windows supports Windows XP and Windows Vista.
- Safelite Framework
Safelite Framework was developed by Synchronica to simulate the behaviour of real mobile devices.
- SDK
Software Development Kit. This is a set of tools that allow independent software developers to create applications and utilities that will run on a specific operating system or platform. Synchronica frequently makes use of SDKs in order to ensure that Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup are able to support as many devices and back-ends as possible. Currently Synchronica is making use of the Apple and Java SDKs to develop a SyncML client for iPhone users, and also a Java Content Repository connector which will simplify customer development of Universal Data Connectors.
- Server
A server is an application or a device which performs services for attached clients. Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup are both server-side products. This means that Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup can perform their functions without requiring access to a client.

- Service Provider
A Service Provider is an organization that provides access to network services and provides mobile telephone services to subscribers. A service provider can be classed as an MVNO or an MNO. Synchronica works with service providers to provide them with push email, PIM and mobile backup solutions which they can rebrand and package as a customized solution to their subscribers.
- Slow Sync
Slow Synchronization. Generally performed at the initial synchronization session, the slow sync feature synchronizes all email and PIM data between the server and a mobile device, ensuring that the data between the two are mirrored.
- Smartphone
A Smartphone is a mobile telephone device that provides information accessing features in tandem with the standard voice and SMS features associated with regular phones. Typically, a Smartphone combines voice services with e-mail services, application accessibility, calendar and PIM functionality and Internet access. Although Smartphones do not typically provide SyncML capabilities, Synchronica has developed and actively supports a SyncML client for Smartphones that can be installed by the subscriber onto their device.

- SMPP
Short Message Peer-to-Peer Protocol. This is a telecommunications protocol which allows for a VPN connection to an SMSC in order to send and receive large volumes of SMSs. Synchronica Mobile Gateway uses the SMPP protocol to connect to an SMPP gateway which enables its email to SMS and the OMA EMN features.

- SMS
Short Message Service. This is a telecommunications text-based messaging service which is typically limited to 160 characters. The email to SMS feature of Synchronica Mobile Gateway provides full compatibility with 100% of the devices on the market, meaning you will not need to invest in a new device to take advantage of an affordable, reliable and convenient email service.
- SMSC
Short Message Service Center. This is the transit element within the telecommunications network that receives SMS messages from senders, and delivers them to recipients. The SMSC is owned and operated by an MNO. Synchronica Mobile Gateway simply integrates with an SMSC using SMPP in order to provide the OMA EMN and email to SMS features.
- SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. This is a server-to-server protocol which is used to transfer emails between computers.
- SNMP
Simple Network Management Protocol. This protocol gathers statistical data about network traffic and the behavior of components within the network. SNMP uses management information bases to define what information is available from any attached device on the network.
- SOAP
Simple Object Access Protocol. This protocol enables communication between programs functioning on different operating systems by using HTTP and XML.
- Solaris
Solaris is a free Unix-based operating system developed by Sun Microsystems. It was originally developed to operate on Sun's SPARC workstations, but it has since evolved to function on workstations from other vendors.
- SP
Service Provider. An organization that provides access to network services and provides mobile telephone services to subscribers. A service provider can be classed as an MVNO or an MNO. Synchronica works with service providers to provide them with push email, PIM and mobile backup solutions which they can rebrand and package as a customized solution to their subscribers.
- Spam

A subscriber is a Service Provider's customer.
- Subscription
A subscription is a charge levied to a subscriber for making use of the Service Provider's services during a period. Synchronica does not charge subscription fees to end-users, but this may be charged by a Service Provider.
- SWUOTA
Software Update Over-The-Air.
- Sydemas
Sydemas is a proprietary scripting language developed by Synchronica, based on XML technology. Sydemas can be used by service providers and device manufacturers to identify and resolve configuration and firmware problems Over-The-Air and then, if appropriate, send updates Over-The-Air. This limits the need to implement product recall exercises, and protects the service provider or device manufacturer from experiencing embarrassing product failures.

Symbian is a company which was created by Psion, Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola. It aims to develop and standardize mobile operating systems which enable devices from various manufacturers to exchange information. Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup, which are based on open industry standards and a zero-footprint architecture, provide a fully suitable push email and PIM solution for Symbian devices, Symbian is fully OMA compatible.
- Symbian OS
Symbian Operating System. This is the operating system developed by Symbian for mobile devices. It offers a high-level of device compatibility for communication and PIM functionality. The Symbian OS is the most popular operating system used for mobile phones. . Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup, which are based on open industry standards and a zero-footprint architecture, provide a fully suitable push email and PIM solution for Symbian devices. - Sync
Synchronize. This is the process of mirroring data that is held on one device onto another device, and vice versa. - Synchronica Scream
The Synchronica Scream from Synchronica Mobile Backup is an innovative feature that emits an embarrassing, annoyingly high pitched scream if a device is stolen. If you think that by simply pulling off and replacing the battery you'd be able to silence it - you cannot. The device will continue to scream until this setting is physically switched off from Synchronica Mobile Backup.

- SyncML
Synchronization Markup Language. A device-independent protocol for synchronization and device management defined by OMA, SyncML is the former name of OMA-DS.
The SyncML initiative was founded in February 2000 as collaboration between Nokia, Ericsson, IBM, Lotus, Matsushita, Motorola, Palm, Psion and Starfish Software. It aims to find a common standard for data synchronization and device management.Synchronica was an early adopter of the standards defined by the SyncML initiative. Additionally, we boast a strong track record in the SyncML space. From the beginning, Synchronica´s products included the world's first SyncML DM server in a carrier-grade environment and the award-winning Mobile Gateway, which enables seamless synchronization of corporate data. Synchronica continues to support SyncML (now OMA DS), and remains an innovative developer of products based on these standards.
- SyncML Client
A SyncML client is client software that can be installed onto a mobile device which does not have existing SyncML capabilities, thus enabling that device to benefit from the SyncML standards.
Synchronica has developed a number of SyncML clients, thereby allowing devices which do not natively support these standards to make use of Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup. Synchronica has developed SyncML clients for mobile devices operating on the Palm OS and Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003, 5 and 6 operating systems (SyncML and IMAP4).
Additionally, Synchronica has developed a PC-based synchronization client that uses Synchronica Mobile Gateway to synchronize contacts, calendar entries, and tasks between a server, the Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail applications on a PC or laptop device. A similar client has also been developed for the Apple Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard Calendaring System. The PC-based SyncML clients are suitable for computing devices which require PIM and email updates but are unable to establish a robust connection to an email server when remote.
Support is provided using the respective SyncML application that is available in the Synchronica Mobile Gateway service and can be downloaded directly onto the device or by making use of a standard PC.

- SyncML Device
A SyncML Device is any device which conforms to the SyncML standard, and the OMA-DS standard. These devices are fully compatible with Synchronica Mobile Gateway service which facilitates PIM synchronization and mobile email.
- TDMA
Time Division Multiple Access. This is a technology used in digital mobile telecommunications that divides each cellular channel into three time slots. This in turn increases the amount of data that can be carried. TDMA is used by a number of competing cellular standards, each implementing TDMA in a somewhat different and incompatible manner.
- Text Message

- UBE

- UDC
Universal Data Connector. This is a connection framework that allows access to services contained on a proprietary server application. The UDC can be written in multiple languages, and it facilitates communication with servers using TCP/IP sockets. Synchronica Mobile Gateway is able to function with any enterprise back-end email server by simply building a UDC back-end connector.
- UDDI
Universal Description, Discovery and Integration. This is a web-based distributed directory that enables businesses to list themselves on the Internet and discover each other, similar to a traditional phone books yellow and white pages.
- UMTS
Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service. Based on the GSM standard, UMTS is a 3G technology that facilitates packet -based transmission of voice, SMS, and multimedia at broadband data rates typically achieving 2 Mbps.
- UNIX
UNIX is an open-architecture computer operating system developed by AT&T Bell Labs and the University of California, Berkeley.
- vCard
Versitcard. This is a standard for the format of electronic business cards containing important contact information that can be distributed via email. Synchronica Mobile Gateway is able to synchronize vCards between a mobile device and a PIM server.
- Virus
A virus is destructive software that is purposely designed to adversely invade and modify the way in which a system operates. The open architecture of the Synchronica Mobile Gateway solution allows easy integration with 3rd party Antivirus software, enabling increased protection with little effort.
- VPN
Virtual Private Network. This is a private network connection based on the TCP/IP protocol, which permits secure access to a network for authorized individuals.
- WAP
Wireless Application Protocol. This is an open international standard which enables applications that use wireless devices to connect to the Internet. WAP is used by Synchronica as another avenue for subscribers to register for the Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup products.
- WCAP
Web Calendar Access Protocol. This is a high level command-based standard which enables communications with a Calendar Server.
- Web Browser
A Web Browser is a software application that formats HTML into a viewable page, thus enabling one to view the content of the WWW or a local intranet.
- Web Service
This is a standardized way of integrating web-based applications using the XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI open standards over an Internet protocol backbone.
XML is used to tag the data, SOAP is used to transfer the data, WSDL is used for describing the services available and UDDI is used for listing what services are available.
- Web-Based Email
Web-Based email is an email service which is generally intended to be accessed via the World Wide Web using a web-browser. Web-based email is highly popular with consumers. Synchronica Mobile Gateway supports IMAP and POP3 web-based email services, enabling subscribers to use free email products provided by Yahoo, AOL and Gmail.
- WebDav
Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning. This is an open protocol which aims to make the World Wide Web a readable and writable medium. WebDav provides functionality to create, change, and move documents on a remote Universal Data Connector or Data Repository, thereby allowing Synchronica Mobile Gateway and Synchronica Mobile Backup to access any back-end.
- Wi-Fi
Wireless Fidelity. This is the trade name for the WLAN wireless networking technology. It enables Wi-Fi compatible devices to utilize IP networks known as ‘Hotspots' without the need to connect via a physical cable.
- WSDL
Web Services Description Language. This is an XML-formatted language that describes a Web service's capabilities as collections of communication endpoints capable of exchanging messages. WSDL is an integral part of UDDI.
- XML
Extensible Markup Language. This is a system for defining, validating, and sharing document formats. XML uses tags to distinguish the structures and attributes of a document.
- Zero Footprint Architecture
Zero Footprint refers to an application which does not require an end-user to install additional software. The term, which was created by Synchronica, results in a faster take-up rate for mobile email and synchronization than competing solutions.
